What to Expect on Sunday Mornings

Profile: We are a young church of young families, college students and a handful of older people from the community. We are multi-racial with African-America, Latino and Asian being the most represented racial groups. Dress is business casual, with some men choosing to wear ties. We are friendly people who are committed to making first time guests feel welcome.

We currently meet for worship services at Hamilton Middle School in North Long Beach. Our sturdy volunteers arrive early and help transform the auditorium and cafeteria into a children’s ministry room and a sanctuary to worship God. (They keenly identify with the Israelites who would build the tabernacle in the desert). There are refreshments, used to encourage fellowship, served before and after the worship service.

Music: Our desire is to have our music ministry centered in the Bible. We sing the Bible back to God. As we sing to God, we believe the music should reflect his creativity. We enjoy contemporary worship, gospel, salsa and hymns. We believe the people of God must learn to enjoy one another’s culture and not allow one culture to be held up as better or dominant in music ministry. We believe in congregational singing. We do not want to spotlight performers, while the rest of congregation sits back passively and watches. God wants us all to sing our hearts out to him for that is where our joy is found.

Sermon: Preaching at FOL will be expositional, meaning that the preacher will expose the main point and theme of the Biblical text. The sermons are between 30-40 minutes in length. Each sermon will contain exhortation at the end to live a grace-empowered life to God. FOL sermons will also keep in mind the unbeliever and give them great opportunity to see their own heart and place in the Biblical text.
