Paintball

BELLFLOWER – Within moments of the opening whistle, the paint-splattered men marched back to the starting line, arms raised in surrender. After a stunned silence, they began to ask, “Who got you?” One name emerged from their lips: “James.”

James Carroll, FOL youth director, charged behind enemy lines, dodging countless yellow spheres fired in his direction. He led his youth team to victory with a blend of tactics, expertise, and superior firepower.

“He’s got legit ninja skills,” said teammate Jason Kang. “The kids loved it.”

In a pregame interview at Hollywood Sports Park, Jacky Chan predicted an afternoon of paintball defeat for Team Olds. “They have James, Jason, and Peter,” he said—along with a full roster of agile youngsters. Fortunately, James switched sides during one match to share his expertise and give the youth an opportunity to take their best shots. Before the round, he shared an important insight: “Aggression is an important part of paintball.”

The FOL Men’s Ministry event brought together men of the church, youth from the high school ministry, and the Springdale Boys Club. Many of the high schoolers do not overlap with Springdale boys, so introducing them to each other was an important goal.

At the end of the day, both young and old recounted stories and displayed welts and bruises before heading to dinner. Many praised event organizers Jeff Lee, David Uyematsu, and Brian Lin.

“I wanted to thank everyone for being so kind to my Springdale kids,” Jason said. “I was so proud of our church as I saw guys try to engage with them in ways that were natural and friendly. They could not stop talking about paintball on the way back.”
