Cameron and Lorenna Become Safe Families for Children Hosts
by Shari Uyematsu
Lorenna and Cameron are about to step out in faith. Yes, they are open to new things, like boba tasting (see photo above) or joining a new church during a global pandemic, but God is calling them to a new challenge. They’ve been approved as Safe Families hosts.
Safe Families for Children is a ministry of biblical hospitality that links hosts with parents who are raising kids without the support of a spouse, family, friends, or Christian community. Sometimes parents are overwhelmed with daily life. Others face desperate situations, like hospitalization or eviction. Safe Families hosts offer a safety net of support. They volunteer to take in children, on a temporary basis—usually only a few days—to help parents get through a crisis and give their kids a safe place to stay. Afterward, the children return to their parents. Very often, the supportive relationship continues beyond the initial hosting.
In order to qualify as Safe Families hosts, Lorenna and Cameron completed an application, submitted references, and underwent a background check. They also received training and a completed a home study. Now they receive notifications of hosting needs in Los Angeles County and they will temporarily host children as their schedule allows.
Safe Families will allow them to open their home to serve others and it will also challenge them to grow as disciples as they give sacrificially to those who can’t pay them back. Their hearts may be broken when they see a family’s situation up close, especially as they grow to love people who were once strangers. They will be challenged to serve humbly without “fixing” others.
Safe Families represents an opportunity for our church family to partner with Cameron and Lorenna and serve families together. As they enter this ministry, would you consider joining their support team? Support could include prayer, words of encouragement, meeting practical needs, or running quick errands. If you would like to receive an email when they are about to host a child, please contact Shari Uyematsu. Thank you in advance for your prayers and encouragement!
